Breaking the Line

On every measure of getting through a defence, the Lions were among the best two or three sides in the United Rugby Championship.

THE RECORD. 203 offloads — the most in the competition. 203 clean breaks, second to Leinster. 483 defenders beaten, second to Glasgow. 7,405 metres, fourth. 75 tries, fourth.

THE READING. The Lions got through defensive lines as often as the sides that won the competition and turned those breaks into significantly less. That is a support-line and decision-making gap, not a personnel one.

THE QUESTION. Can the same ambition survive contact with better organised defences, and be converted more efficiently when it does?

OFFLOADS: 203. First in the competition. The Vodacom Bulls managed 186, Leinster 180 and log-topping Glasgow Warriors 124. No side in the URC kept the ball alive through contact as often as the Lions did.

CLEAN BREAKS: 203. Second, behind Leinster's 219 and ahead of the Bulls on 202 and Glasgow on 184.

DEFENDERS BEATEN: 483. Second, behind Glasgow's 561 and ahead of the Bulls (469), Leinster (468) and Ulster (460).

TRY ASSISTS: 57. A figure that belongs with the offload count — a side passing out of contact creates the last pass more often.

METRES GAINED: 7,405. Fourth, and this is where the pattern breaks. The Bulls gained 9,720 and Leinster 9,494. The Lions broke the line as often as either and travelled more than two thousand metres less.

POINTS AND TRIES: 542 and 75. Fourth and fourth. The Bulls scored 640 points and 92 tries; Leinster 630 and 93.

WHAT THE COMBINATION MEANS. A side that is second in clean breaks and fourth in tries is losing something between the break and the line. That gap is the single clearest area for improvement in the 2025/26 attacking record, and it is not a personnel problem — it is a support-line and decision-making one.

THE COST COLUMN. 237 turnovers lost. Offloading at 203 a season is how you generate 483 defenders beaten. It is also how you hand the ball back. Both figures belong to the same decision.

Second in clean breaks. Fourth in tries. That gap is the whole coaching brief.
