A versatile forward covering the second row and the back row, in the Lions system alongside his Golden Lions Currie Cup commitments. At 187 centimetres and 101 kilograms Cairns is built for the modern flanker role, where mobility and defensive work rate matter more than bulk. At twenty-five he is at the point where regular URC exposure determines the trajectory.
