Season Story

Lions 24 Stormers 10

Ellis Park, Round 12. Ninety minutes that delivered the first South African Shield in the club's history.

The Shield was not won in the last minute. It was won in the first twenty.

The Lions arrived at the final derby weekend of the season with the South African Shield live and the Stormers standing in the way. Cape Town's side had taken the Shield in two of the competition's first three seasons; Johannesburg had never taken it at all.

Inside twenty minutes it was 14-0. Siba Mahashe scored the first, Henco van Wyk the second, both built on the kicking of Morné van den Berg, whose control of territory in the opening quarter left the Stormers playing the match in the wrong half of the field. Possession and territory both belonged to the Lions and the scoreboard followed.

What made the win convincing rather than merely decisive was what happened after the early surge. Sides who score two quick tries in a derby often spend the next hour defending them. The Lions did not. They finished 24-10, a fourteen-point margin against a side that would reach the play-offs, and they did it without the late scramble that had characterised too many previous derby afternoons at Ellis Park.

The result did two things at once. It secured the Shield — the first URC silverware in the club's history and the first time since the regional shields were introduced in 2021 that the South African trophy had gone to Johannesburg. And it consolidated a top-eight position that would carry the Lions into a URC quarter-final and, beyond that, into the Investec Champions Cup.

One afternoon, one derby, and two firsts that had taken the club five URC seasons to reach.

The Shield was not won in the last minute. It was won in the first twenty.
