A Saturday in Doornfontein

What a Lions match day feels like, from the walk in to the final whistle.

THE GROUND. 10bet Ellis Park, corner of Currey and Staib Street, Doornfontein. Sixty-two thousand five hundred and sixty-seven seats, opened in 1928 on land given by a Johannesburg councillor, rebuilt between 1980 and 1981, and the venue of a Rugby World Cup final.

THE ALTITUDE. Roughly 1,750 metres. It changes how the ball travels and how the last quarter feels, and every visiting side is told about it before they arrive.

THE SHAPE OF THE DAY. Most URC home fixtures in 2026/27 kick off in the early to mid afternoon — Leinster at 13h30 in September, the Bulls at 14h30 in December, the Stormers at 14h30 in February. The Champions Cup matches against Toulouse and Exeter both start at 15h00. These are afternoon fixtures in a Johannesburg summer, which shapes everything from what people wear to when they arrive.

INSIDE THE BOWL. The upper tiers carry sound in a way that visiting players notice inside ten minutes. When the ground is full it is one of the loudest rugby stadiums in the southern hemisphere, and the noise arrives in waves rather than as a constant — which is why the moments it peaks tend to coincide with the moments matches turn.

THE SEASON AHEAD AT HOME. Nine URC fixtures and two Investec Champions Cup matches. Leinster, Ospreys, the Bulls, Zebre, Cardiff, the Sharks, the Stormers, Munster and Benetton — plus Stade Toulousain and Exeter Chiefs.

GETTING THERE AND GETTING IN. Ticketing, parking, gates, transport and the family offer are all detailed at lionsrugby.co.za.
