Red and black: the colours of a club that has never traded on charm.

A Johannesburg Club

Founded three years after the city itself, and recognisable in it ever since.

The Transvaal Rugby Union was formed in 1889. Johannesburg had existed for three years. Gold had been found on the Witwatersrand in 1886 and people were arriving from everywhere to dig for it, and among the things they built was a rugby union.

That origin explains more about this club than any trophy cabinet does.

A CITY OF ARRIVALS. Johannesburg has never been a place people inherit. It is a place people come to, for work, and then stay. The club reflects it: unsentimental, built by outsiders, permanently suspicious of anybody who assumes it will fail. Cape Town has beauty and Pretoria has institutions. Johannesburg has work.

WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE ON A FIELD. Three defeats in nine days to open the 2025/26 season, including a first loss to Zebre in the club's history. What followed was eight home wins from nine, 203 offloads — more than any club in the United Rugby Championship — and a trophy by February. Not a side that endured a bad start. A side that took hold of the season and refused to give it back.

RED AND BLACK. The colours of a club that has never traded on charm.

ELLIS PARK. 1,750 metres above sea level, 62,567 seats, and a World Cup final on the record. Visiting teams are told about the altitude. What actually beats them is a crowd that knows exactly when to make itself heard.

GRIT. It is an overused word in sport, usually describing a side that lost bravely. That is not what it means here. Here it means a group that took the worst start available to it and turned the same season into the best in the club's URC history.

PRIDE. Eleven Currie Cups. A Super 10. A World Cup final hosted on this pitch. A first South African Shield. And now Toulouse, in Doornfontein, in December.

This is a Johannesburg club. It has never pretended to be anything else.

Cape Town has beauty and Pretoria has institutions. Johannesburg has work.
