A Place Earned, Not Inherited
Toulouse. Saracens. La Rochelle. Exeter Chiefs. Connacht. All confirmed, all fixtured — and not one of them won a European trophy last season.
The Lions are not entering Europe to be introduced. They are entering to compete.
The Lions enter the Investec Champions Cup in 2026/27 as the 10bet Lions, drawn in Pool 2, with four fixtures confirmed and two of them at 10bet Ellis Park.
The Lions are in this competition because of what they did in the United Rugby Championship, not because of an invitation. They won the South African Shield, finished seventh and reached the quarter-finals.
THE FIXTURES. Round 1: Stade Rochelais away, Stade Marcel Deflandre, Saturday 17 October 2026, 18h30 SA. Round 2: Stade Toulousain at 10bet Ellis Park, Saturday 12 December 2026, 15h00. Round 3: Saracens away, StoneX Stadium, Sunday 10 January 2027, 15h15 SA. Round 4: Exeter Chiefs at 10bet Ellis Park, Saturday 16 January 2027, 15h00.
HOW THE COMPETITION WORKS. Twenty-four clubs, four pools of six, four pool matches each — two home, two away. Clubs do not face opponents from their own league in the pool stage, which is why Connacht sit in Pool 2 without meeting the Lions. The Round of 16 runs on 2, 3 and 4 April 2027, quarter-finals on 9, 10 and 11 April, semi-finals on 30 April, 1 and 2 May, and the final in Lyon on Saturday 22 May 2027.
STADE TOULOUSAIN. Six-time European champions and the most decorated club in the competition's history. Antoine Dupont, Thomas Ramos, Emmanuel Meafou. In 2025/26 they were beaten 30-15 by Bordeaux-Bègles in the quarter-finals. They come to Doornfontein on 12 December, kicking off at three in the afternoon.
SARACENS. Maro Itoje, Owen Farrell, Jamie George. In 2025/26 they went out in the Round of 16, beaten 31-22 at Bath. The Lions travel to north London on 10 January.
STADE ROCHELAIS. Two-time champions and the Lions' first opponents. In 2025/26 they finished fifth in their Champions Cup pool and dropped into the Challenge Cup knockouts, where Ulster beat them 41-24 in the quarter-finals.
EXETER CHIEFS. Champions in 2020. In 2025/26 they played in the Challenge Cup — the same competition the Lions were in — and reached the semi-finals, where Ulster beat them 29-12. They visit 10bet Ellis Park on 16 January.
CONNACHT RUGBY. The sixth club in the pool, and a fellow URC side, so they do not meet the Lions in the pool stage. In 2025/26 they reached the Challenge Cup quarter-finals.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR THE VENUE. Two Champions Cup fixtures at 10bet Ellis Park, against a six-time champion and a former champion, both kicking off at three o'clock on a Johannesburg afternoon in a 62,567-seat stadium at altitude. This is the strongest two-match package the venue has been able to offer in a generation.
THE STANDARD. Pool 2 contains European champions, former champions and clubs long accustomed to knockout rugby. In 2025/26 none of the five won a European trophy — Toulouse lost a quarter-final, Saracens went out in the last sixteen, La Rochelle dropped into the Challenge Cup knockouts, and Exeter and Connacht played in that same second-tier competition alongside the Lions. That is context, not comfort.
THE OBJECTIVE. Stated plainly: qualify for the Round of 16. That requires protecting Ellis Park and finding points on the road, which is precisely the gap the 2025/26 season identified.
